What is the ECR Lab?

The ECR Lab conducts studies on water disasters of beaches and rivers, and morphology changes accompanying such disasters in and outside Japan through field surveys and numerical analyses. There are concerns that natural disasters caused by climate change will become more serious worldwide, suggesting that disaster research will become increasingly important. Japan is one of the most disaster-prone nations: e.g., regarding sea level rise, over 50 % of all beaches in Japan will disappear if it rises by 30 cm. It is thus essential to conduct proper risk assessment and find appropriate adaptation measures. The research theme of each student is decided through discussions between the supervisor and the student.

An estimated 7.1 magnitude earthquake brought destruction to Akita and Yamagata Prefectures and caused a tsunami to batter coastal areas
